What documents should you travel with?

Passports

You won’t be leaving your home country without your passports. One thing you will need to remember is that most countries require you to have at least six months left on your passport before letting you into the country. Keep this information in the back of your mind as you come over to Asia, because not only will you want six months left when you arrive, but you might want to travel around the region and you’ll need six months left to get into Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, and the other countries that are a short hop out of Penang. Here is a list of places you can go with a direct flight out of Penang!

Immunizations

To be honest, we haven’t been asked for proof of our immunizations yet. But there was a time in the past, and there will probably be a time in the future when this will be important. Why not keep it with you? In the US, these little booklets are given to you when you get the shots at your county health department or at your doctor’s office.

Documents needed if giving birth abroad

If you anticipate giving birth overseas, you need the original birth certificates of the parents. If you are married, you need the original marriage license. Item number 8 on this website gave us a problem when we had to register a birth abroad in 2010. Her parents were coming to see the new baby, and we were able to ask them to bring old W-2 forms.

I plan to have a whole page on giving birth overseas with more information later.
