Field Trip to the School of Hard Knocks at Royal Selangor

The school of hard knocks at Royal Selangor Visitor Centre at Straits Quay in Penang

As homeschoolers we have the flexibility to go on field trips whenever we want.  For this particular field trip we paired up with the exciting family at Our Travel Lifestyle.  This time we decided to learn about the history of pewter in Malaysia at the School of Hard Knocks at the Royal Selangor Visitor Centre in the middle of Straits Quay.

Another visit to the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur

The cover of a US Passport picked up at the US Embassy in KL I’m going to wrap up the story of having a baby in Penang with this final story.  To sum up, we’ve delivered a healthy baby boy.  We’ve gotten the Malaysian birth certificate processed and in hand.  We written to the US Embassy in Kuala Lumpur and pulled together all the forms and documents they asked for.  And we had a little adventure of trying to get a passport photo of the little tyke.  Now it’s time to get ourselves and the baby to KL and submit the paperwork.  (Of course, since we’re driving, we’ll stop at our favorite rest stop on the way)

The frustration of taking baby passport pictures

Baby's passport photo before cropping

Baby’s passport photo before cropping

I love having a new baby.  Maybe, it’s because this is kid number 4 and we’re starting to get the hang of it.  Maybe it’s because the older ones are now able to help out more.  Whatever it is, we’re glad that we had our baby in Penang.  Now that the paperwork involved with getting a Malaysian birth certificate is out of the way, it is time to go apply for an American passport. Well one of the steps involved with getting a passport is getting a passport photo for that baby.  This has not been easy.  So in today’s post, I’ll have the requirements for passport photos as well as some tips and hints for getting that shot for your baby passport picture.

Requirements list from the Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara for a Malaysian birth certificate

Requirements list from the Jabatan Pendaftaran Negara for a Malaysian birth certificate

While my wife was still checked in at the hospital, the staff at Island Hospital prepared a lot of the paperwork that I would need to take to the government office to register the baby for a Malaysian birth certificate.  We were given a detailed checklist (in Bahasa Melayu) of papers that I needed to get together and bring to the office.  Here it is in English. Having a baby in Penang

Having a baby in Penang

Self congratulations are in order.  We had a baby in Penang last month, and I want to share with you our experience with prenatal care, delivery, and the follow up since.

Dr. Narinda Singh Shadan and our newborn at Island Hospital in Penang

Dr. Narinda Singh Shadan and our newborn

First, we need to introduce you to Dr. Narinder Singh Shadan, one of the O.B.s at Island Hospital.  (find all the letters after his name here) We were referred to Dr. Narinder through other expat friends who had a baby in Penang, just as my wife was starting to go through the ordeal of morning sickness.  Dr. Narinder has the distinction of being the only doctor certified to do water birth in Penang.  We had heard about it when we had our other children, but didn’t have it available to us where we were living before, and now we had the opportunity.  I’m not going into the details of water birth, you can read more about it at waterbirth.org. Orang Utan Island Bukit Merah

The birthday girl pointing out the orangutans in the trees overhead at Orang Utan Island Bukit Merah

We’ve been living in Penang for over a year and we don’t do as many of the touristy things that everyone seems to do.  So over the holidays, we had some friends come and stay with us for a week and that inspired us to go and do some touristy things.  They happened to be here on my middle daughter’s birthday and she was given the opportunity to choose our day’s activity.  She chose to all go to Orang Utan Island in Bukit Merah.  So we packed up the two families into our Avanza and headed off on our adventure. List of International Schools in Penang

One of my goals for this website is to provide a resource for those who are looking at Penang as a possible place to live.  To that end, here is a list of the international schools that are here on the island.  I have no association with any of these schools, other than being friends with some teachers and parents at some of them.  If any representatives from these institutions want, please contact me and I can give your school some more space here on this website. I just finished a Complete List of International Schools in Kuala Lumpur post.  I found 45 schools.  There isn’t another list online that has more than 30. Read more…

Our good friends Rob and Tyra at ZG Trading sell this awesome pedal-less bike to help little ones learn to balance and ride.  It’s called the KaZAM bike.  As you can see above, our two year old is getting the hang of balancing and steering.  It is adjustable and goes all the way down to her level.   Read more…

Gurney plaza great for potty training

My daughter just turned two years old and has started potty training. Our older children learned while we were living in Indonesia. I remember how hard it was to find a place to take them when we were there. Often it was a squat pot and a wet one to boot.

This morning I found myself at Gurney Plaza with the little one and was pleasantly surprised with what I found there. There are special family/handicapped restrooms on each level.  They have an adult sized toilet with handicapped accessible bars.  And they also have these little child sized toilets.  Just the thing to help my little girl not be afraid of the toilet.

Here is a discrete picture of a proud little girl

I won’t be too nervous about being out and about with her these next few months.
